Despite a stakes win over the same track last month, Premier Pegasus was not the favorite. Slow to win the respect of the crowd, he remains unbeaten after three races. His front-running win in Saturday’s $100,000 Hollywood Prevue Stakes was impressive, to say the least.
The horse finished 1 1/2 lengths ($6), in front of Industry Leader, another 2-1 chance, who nailed his maiden win last month.
Premier Pegasus led the field early on by a half-length, holding off challengers Industry Leader and Awesome Patriot at the 23.08 and 46.34 mark. The horse pulled out early in the stretch with a 2 1/2 length lead and a furlong to go. With jockey Alonso Quinonez aboard, Premier Pegasus’s time for seven furlongs was 1:22:78. Industry Leader beat out Awesome Patriot by a length, in the six horse field. High Level Jeff, originally the 9-5 favorite, with his two wins at Calder, only finished fifth, and never came close to being a threat.
Quinonez has helmed Premier Pegasus through all three wins. He noted that the colt is becoming more comfortable racing on the lead, after Saturday’s win.
“The second time he relaxed so good,” Quinonez relayed. “This time, it was even better. I had horses inside and he waited. When I asked him, he took off. I said, ‘I better go before they get the jump on me.’
Owned and trained by breeder Myung Kwon Cho, Premier Pegasus has earned $125,400 to date. By Fusaichi Pegasus, Premier Pegasus beat maidens at Del Mar in a 44-1 upset in July and won the Jack Goodman Stakes here on Oct. 23 with 5-1 odds.
