A horse shoe worn by the great thoroughbred race horse, Secretariat during his Futurity Stakes Victory, in September of 1972 at Belmont Park is being auctioned on eBay. Proceeds are to benefit the Secretariat Foundation.
The shoe is “a very important and historically piece as only a handful of authenticated Secretariat shoes have ever been made available for public auction,” according to the Foundation. Mounted on a wooden plaque, the horse shoe is to be auctioned until noon of December 19th, 2010. As of noon, December 10th, the high bid was at $1,225.00 and had not yet exceeded the unlisted reserve price.
Taken from Secretariat’s left front foot, the horse shoe was mounted on the plaque by the late Jim Gaffney, Secretariat’s exercise rider.
